My old Chicago
July 17th, 2005
From an email I wrote this week…
About Chicago — I don’t know about Chicago. It’s big which means there are lots of people doing lotsa stuff. It’s spread out. There are many scenes, though I never participated in any. I found adventure, which makes me glad, and I learned a lot about music there — I branched away from the mainstream shtuff, started playing the drums … but Chicago? It feels far away from everything. The midwest is plain, and it’s cold there for a while. I learned how to ride a motorcycle. It has a growing portion of the soulless suburbs invading, in the form of those three-story brick and mortarstone townhomes. They sprout like weeds. Maybe you know what I mean, I don’t know how far this architectural excuse has spread. But there is also history, and street festivals, and the lake. And Lake Shore Drive is an excellent, amazing road. I’ve seen and felt so much on it. My last two years there were spent building a freelance design business from my bedroom. I worked myself into a rut, wanted to see my life outside that city, found a ticket out of there and left. I’ve learned so much about friendship since then, and perspective. It was the best thing I ever did for myself, and I intend to do more.
