What do Nimrod Weiselfish, Tokyo Sexwale, Miracle Wanzo, Tanqueray Beavers and Princess Nocandy have in common?

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

They were each winners in this decade’s “Name of the Year” awards (Name of the Year is a group founded 25 years ago to “discover, verify, nominate, elect, and disseminate great names.”)
The 2007 winner was just crowned: Vanilla Dong. See the full list of winners at the Name of the Year blog here.

New Favorite Site: WheresGeorge.com

Wednesday, February 28th, 2007

It’s silly — track the places your cash has been — but I like it. I got a one-dollar bill with www.wheresgeorge.com scribbled on it, I plugged in the serial number, and hey — that dollar bill was in South Carolina six months ago. Yes, this stuff entertains me. Yeah, I know.
Where’s George

Off to a weird start

Monday, January 1st, 2007

Update: Found a new reason for happy: I found the mp3 of the cover of Paul Simon’s Graceland by Casiotone for the Painfully Alone. It’s superb, one of the best “make it your own”-type covers I know.

Blue Ridge Country and the ask/receive gambit

Monday, November 27th, 2006

Heck, it was only two months ago when I wrote about how I wished Blue Ridge Country 98.1 FM had live streaming of their stuff. And now they do. Sweet. This is particularly handy now that I’m not living in North Carolina. I recommend tuning in Friday nights between 6 and 10 p.m., East Coast […]

Pulling the trigger

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

Tonight I launched Joe Think, my blog about how local journalism can use the internet to be awesome and relevant. It’s something I meant to do a while ago, but ya’ know, stuff comes up. Stuff is still coming up, sure. But I needed a better home for my work-related rants and thoughts and ideas […]

Being a librarian can be fun: Google’s Image Labeler

Tuesday, September 5th, 2006

Found this last weekend: it’s a game that matches you up with a partner and shows one image at a time. Each of you guess labels for that image, and when both of you guess the same label you move on to the next image. Each image you both guess earns you 100 points, which […]

No internet at home can be a beautiful thing

Monday, August 28th, 2006

I’ve lived without computer and internet at home for two weeks. I fixed the computer today, so it’s back and stuff, but the last two weeks were awesome. I’m got so much stuff done. I did the cleaning and organizing I should have done years ago, I read a lot more, I took a walk, […]

Awesome ways to deliver information

Wednesday, July 12th, 2006

I caught up on the last four months of posts from Information Aesthetics, this blog about “data visualization and visual culture.” Here are the highlights (link to the site followed by IA’s description and link to the IA blog post):

DrugQuilt: A dynamic data visualization of the brand name & generic drugs the US Food & […]

The spammers found Furl

Friday, June 23rd, 2006

It’s unfortunate. I subscribed to Furl’s most-popular feed for about a year, it was a good index of what’s good on the web. In the last week the noise on that feed has gone up, with links to Myrtle beach real estate and Acne meds.
Furl could block this stuff with a combination of IP blacklisting, […]
