I used to work for the Winston-Salem Journal, and I still tune in every once in a while to the blog its managing editor Ken Otterbourg writes. Ken wrote about the newspaper’s coverage of the National Black Theatre Festival, and the feedback he gets from the town.

He wrote this paragraph, which handles gracefully the issue I see some people have difficulty with (most of whom are commenters on The Denver Post’s articles):

One of the issues is of course terminology, its the National BLACK Theatre Festival. And so one caller asked when we were going to cover the National WHITE Theatre Festival and wouldn’t people be up in arms if such an event existed. But of course, such events exist. They’re just not labeled as such. And we do cover them. The labeling along racial and ethnic lines is part of minority groups—racial, ethnic, religious—banding together to tell the majority that they exist. Majority groups don’t have to label. They’re implied.

Okay, so I’m still a noob with all the snowboard lingo, but this I know: I stuck / bombed / went down my first black diamond run last week. It was the Last Hoot run at Keystone, and I carved the heck outta all but one really steep part of it. Awesome, right? Sure.

My friends Holiday and Mia were in town for Mia’s 30th birthday, and I got three days on the slopes with them and their crew.

I also stuck some sweet shots with my camera on the slopes — here are a couple of them:

There was a crew of carebears on the mountain that day that I ran into at a few different points.
Blue bear at the top of the slope:

I was with blue bear as he had trouble going down the slope, and shot this photo right as he met up with the bears that had waited behind for him:

This month is poetry month (among other things that are being celebrated all month long I’m sure). This month I found a book of Robert Bly’s poetry. I found Robert Bly through this fascinating lit mag from North Carolina called The Sun, which came to me via Sarah. So yeah, I found the book, which I had misplaced that book last month, so that was cool. It’s called Morning Poems, and it’s a collection of poems Bly wrote soon after waking. Here’s one of them:

One Source of Bad Information

There’s a boy in you about three
Years old who hasn’t learned a thing for thirty
Thousand years. Sometimes it’s a girl.

This child had to make up its mind
How to save you from death. He said things like:
“Stay home. Avoid elevators. Eat only elk.”

You live with this child, but you don’t know it.
You’re in the office, yes, but live with this boy
At night. He’s uninformed, but he does want

To save your life. And he has. Because of this boy
You survived a lot. He’s got six big ideas.
Five don’t work. Right now he’s repeating them to you.

» Here’s another one of Bly’s: The Resemblance Between Your Life and A Dog
