You are my favorite live band. I saw you play twice in Winston-Salem North Carolina, and those shows were unforgettable. Then I moved to Denver, where I’ve lived for almost five years. I haven’t seen you play in five years. Will you come to Denver?
Sincerely,
Joe

I had a ticket to Wednesday’s Avett Brothers show at the Boulder Theater. I couldn’t go, and so I went to craigslist to sell the ticket.
I didn’t want to sell it to the first person to email me … that’s boring. So I wrote this in the post: “If you want the ticket, send [...]

It’s 2008, and I don’t love Okkervil River in the way I loved them five years ago. But, still, this band. When I first read their lyrics, posted in plain text, I went from infatuation to love. Their words look like stories, not like songs crafted to fit some sort of A A B A [...]

Last year I went to my first DPUMS (Denver Post Underground Music Showcase). Had a great time and saw tons of music I wouldn’t have otherwise seen. It’s a browser’s market — with so many venues so close together you can keep walking until you find something you like. Okay, sure, this may look like [...]

Cleveland I ain’t never felt something so strong / been believing the words to my songs, Ohio I’m leaving, Ohio I’m gone.

Saturday a bunch of local bands played the Denver Post Underground Music Festival, which was the biggest local music fest I’ve ever seen, and the most fun I’ve had on a Saturday in Denver. So much good stuff. Here are the ‘most interesting’ Flickr photos from the event. These are the ones I took. And [...]

Hey y’all,
Saturday night my employer, the Post, throws its 7th-annual Underground Music Festival. Well, not Saturday night. Saturday afternoon, evening and night. It’s $10 before the show (tix at www.dpums.com), $12 day-of. I don’t know half the bands playing, and that’s a whole bunch of the fun.
Here’s more info on the event:
YouTube videos of some [...]

Virb’s yet another social networking site, and it’s a place you can listen to my friend Tom’s (music name Tommy Slax) new album. If you dig it you can buy tracks from the album (The Spaulding Years) here… it’s an interesting site — tracks are about 16 cents a pop, but the more people who [...]

This photo is of me in the bedroom holding the album that the National released this week. The National is a band that chooses words well. The quote below is from an article in the New York Times.
Researchers have found that the human brain has a natural affinity for narrative construction. People tend to remember [...]

Hey, so Tuesday night (at 9 p.m.) my Chicago friends Jack Flash and Gretta Fine bring their band Bang! Bang! to the 15th Street Tavern in Denver. They call Bang! Bang! “sex rock,” but it’s more like glam-lick rock.
I’ve followed Bang! Bang! since they started — at first because they were friends, and now [...]
