King Corn documentary playing Denver, one night only

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

Hey, So I saw this documentary in Portland back in November, and it was great. It was all about corn farmers in the United States and the last thirty or forty years of the corn industry — sounds like a real snoozer, right? It’s not. It explains obesity, diabetes, the current state of vending machines, […]

Four things a disc jockey could be thinking if nobody’s dancing at the party that they’re spinning at:

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

New Year’s Eve I witnissed a dj spin to a crowd of 50 people, and zero dancers. Not just zero for a song or two, but zero for most every song. I like putting myself in my enemy’s head, so here’s a list of the four things I came up with that dj could have […]

Notes, photos, bits, awards, blurbs, music, Ms. Pac Man, stuff

Monday, December 10th, 2007

Hey y’all, Here’s a bunch of stuff that’s awesome and you oughta know: JJ, whose photo portfolio web site I built, is selling a book of his detailed Chicago photography for 30 bucks. Thirty bucks! That makes a great gift! My employer, The Denver Post, won an Online News Association award last month for “General […]

Election night 2007

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

I’ve spent three of the past four fiirst-Tuesday-in-November-nights working on online election coverage. Each of those have been challenging — 2004 it was just dealing with all the information, 2006 was figuring out the streaming video shtuff, and this year, even though it was an off year, had a last-minute data thrill: We decided to […]

Shoe story

Saturday, September 1st, 2007

June 9 I came home to these shoes by my porch / stoop. And this afternoon, 84 days later, their owner came back to claim them. He didn’t speak much english, and he said he had been in the detox center on the corner of my block. I believed him because: He wore a hospital-style […]

Denver’s the cheapest place to live alone, but no longer the best single’s town.

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

So says Forbes. Denver’s ranked on the top of Forbes’ “Best Cities for Singles” list three years in a row, until this one. Forbes says it’s the methodology that caused Denver’s plummet. I wrote more about it on the Denver Post Neighbors blog.

Denver bands I saw for the first time Saturday that I would totally go see again

Monday, August 13th, 2007

Saturday a bunch of local bands played the Denver Post Underground Music Festival, which was the biggest local music fest I’ve ever seen, and the most fun I’ve had on a Saturday in Denver. So much good stuff. Here are the ‘most interesting’ Flickr photos from the event. These are the ones I took. And […]

It’s Saturday: Denver Post Underground Music Festival

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

Hey y’all, Saturday night my employer, the Post, throws its 7th-annual Underground Music Festival. Well, not Saturday night. Saturday afternoon, evening and night. It’s $10 before the show (tix at www.dpums.com), $12 day-of. I don’t know half the bands playing, and that’s a whole bunch of the fun. Here’s more info on the event: YouTube […]
